“I will be right back” Mark said and ran to upstairs. Kate stood up and looked in mirror. Her mascara was all over her face, her eyes were red and swallowed. She went to bathroom and washed her face. She put Marks t-shirt on. She tied her hair up. “Kate” Marks voice was shouting her. Kate went to living room and saw Mark. Mark had changed his clothes from sweatpants to jeans and said to Kate “ Come, lets go to see that doctor together”. Kate felt her tears coming again to her cheeks and she said “ Mark, I’m too scared”. Mark came near her and hugged her tightly “Don’t worry Kate, I’m here with you”. He kissed her on her forehead and said “ Lets go”.

Mark was driving, Kate held his hand and looked out from window. Kate was thinking how she wasn’t done anything yet. She wanted to do so much in her life but for now she had just studied, worked and been in couple bad relationships. Her prince charming was still somewhere out there, her ideal job was still missing and her dreams were still just dreams. “Kate, we are there” Marks voice interrupted her thinking. Kate got up from car and she froze front of doctors office. Her feet didn’t move, she just couldn’t go there. Mark came near her, hugged here and said “I’m here”, he took her hand to his and they went together in. Mark could feel how Kate’s hand was shaking. He took her to sit down and went to talk to nurse.

Kate sat in waiting area while Mark was talking with nurse. She was shaking and she had sick feeling in her stomach. Kate saw Mark coming towards her, he smiled but Kate knew that wasn’t his happy smile more his fake smile what he uses when he lies or hides something. Mark sat next to Kate, took her hand to his and said “ Doctor will take us after 5 minutes”. Kate looked his eyes and said quietly “ Mark I cant go there, I just cant”. “ Kate, listen to me. We have to go there and find out what’s going on. Don’t be scared, I will be there with you, okay” Mark replied and kissed Kate to her forehead. Kate felt like those 5 minutes were longest 5 minutes in her life, clock seemed to be stopped, Mark was moving his feet nervously and there was so quiet. “Kate Warren” nurse shouted. Mark and Kate stood up same time and looked each other. “ Come” Mark said and held Kate’s hand. They walked behind nurse and Mark could feel how Kate was shaking. They entered in same room where Kate had been in morning. Kate felt like she is going to faint, she was so scared and held Marks hand even tighter. “ Please sit down, Doctor Brown will be here in 2 minutes” nurse said to them and closed the door. Kate didn't let Marks hand go, she said to him “ Mark I’m so scared, don’t let my hand go please”. “ I wont Kate, trust me” Mark replied and looked her in her eyes. Doctor opened door and came in. He came near them and said “Hello and sorry that you had to wait. I’m Doctor Brown”  He shook Marks hand first and then Kate’s. Doctor sat down behind his desk. “ So Kate how are you feeling now?” Doctor asked and looked her in eyes. “I’m fine” Kate answered quietly and fast. “ I will go throw now your test results and x-rays images step by step and you can and you should ask when something is bothering you” Doctor said and got file in his hands. Kate and Mark held hands together tightly.


Doctor explained how Kate’s blood samples showed that everything wasn’t right and how in x-ray they saw malignant tumor in Kate’s stomach and that was spread in really wide area.  Kate started crying and she also saw how Marks eyes were full of tears. “ Doctor what’s the treatment? Surgery? Chemotherapy?” Mark asked.               “ Because tumor is so big and in wide area in surgery we would have to remove all vital organs so we cannot simply do surgery to Kate. Chemotherapy is one option, but in Kate’s situation her cancer is in sixth stage so chemotherapy would just prevent cancer to spread but she would lose all her strengths and if she gets any disease while chemotherapy that can be fatal to her” Doctor explained. “So basically you are saying that you cant do anything” Mark raised his voice “Your job is save people, why wont you help my Kate, why?” Mark shouted and cried at same time. Kate was crying, but she took deep breath and asked “ How long do I have time before I die?”.” Kate don’t, you are not going anywhere. You are not dying. We will go to see other doctor and he will heal you okay” Mark said to Kate. “No Mark, I want to know now!” Kate raised her voice and looked the doctor. Doctor said “ Well we cant know precise time, every tumor acts in different way. We can see how tumor is acted for now and in your situation I would give you five to seven months before cancer hits final stage”. “Five to seven months” Kate repeated in shivering voice. “This cant be true, come on Kate we will see a specialist. This doctor talks crap, he doesn’t know anything. Lets go!” Mark shouted. “ We always recommend our patients to get another opinion too. You should go to see or call to another cancer specialist and talk with him” Doctor said and looked Kate.  Mark pulled Kate’s hand and he walked really fast. They left from doctors office, sat down in car and Mark looked so angry but suddenly he started to smile and said “ Lets go to eat something and then we will go to see or call to cancer specialist, okay” Kate nodded. Mark and Kate both were quiet whole trip to restaurant. Mark parked his car front of Italian restaurant, which was Kate’s favorite restaurant.

Kate finally reached Marks home. Mark had his car front of his house and Kate saw from the window that in the kitchen lights are on. Kate was relieved, Mark was home. Kate ran to his door and rang doorbell many times. No one opened. She knocked many times. No one opened. She felt like her world just crashed down. She didn’t know what to do. Mark would have known what to do and what to say. Kate sat down on ground. She was crying. She just kept thinking about cancer and that she had no one to talk to. Suddenly door opened. Kate turned around and saw Mark on the door.


Mark looked at Kate. Kate was all wet, her mascara was on her cheeks, and her eyes were red from crying. Kate stood up and hugged Mark. She cried same time and hugged him even tighter. He asked ”Kate, what’s wrong?” Kate didn’t get any words out, she just kept crying hysterically and couldn’t stop. Mark asked her to come in. He told to Kate to sit on the chair and he went to get her glass of water.  He came back with the glass of water and said ”Drink this and take a deep breath, Kate”. Kate tried to drink the water but her hands were shaking so much that she just couldn’t drink. ”Kate, just tell me what happened” Mark asked. He was really worried, he wasn’t never seen her so upset. Kate had always been strongest person who he knew. He had seen Kate crying just in her granddads’ funeral so he knew that something serious had happened. After many deep breaths, Kate finally calmed down. Her voice was really weak and she just looked Mark in eyes and said ” I have an incurable cancer”.  Mark looked Kate and he didn’t get any words out. He sat down on the floor and he was as shocked as Kate was. “How, When Kate” he mumbled. “Doctor told me today, I just couldn’t take it and ran straight here”.  Kate told him and continued “Mark you have to tell me that this isn’t true, Mark please” Kate started crying again. Mark came near her, hugged her  and said “Kate don’t worry, this has to be misunderstanding. Don’t worry we will sort this out”.

Story begins..

Kate was walking while it was raining, normally she would have taken taxi when its raining but not this time, she didn’t care. Kate didn’t care how much did it rain, how her heels were killing her or how her all clothes were completely wet. She was too upset to care.

Earlier this morning Kate had her routine doctor’s check up which she had every year, that routine check up changed her life. Doctor said after tests and x-ray results to her those words which everyone are scared to hear from doctors mouth " You have an incurable cancer".
Kate didn’t believe the doctor. How could she have a cancer? She is in her late 20`s, she has always had healthy living habits and she had only stomach aches. Kate started crying hysterically. Doctor tried to calm her, but no Kate was too shocked and ran away from doctors office. She didn’t want to hear him anymore. She just kept telling her self; she didn’t have a cancer, that just can’t be true, doctor has made a mistake.  Kate walked around the city, she was crying and she couldn’t think anything else than what doctor had said. Her phone rang, her mom was calling, she turned her phone off, she didn’t want to talk anyone else than Mark.

Mark was Kate’s oldest friend. They had known each other since daycare. Mark had always been there for her even when she turned his love down. Only Mark could turn this situation around and tell her that doctor has made a mistake and she is healthy like before.
